Our English department has done an excellent job this year instituting independent reading time for each student. We were told recently that the Art students would be creating posters of each teacher holding a favorite book of theirs or perhaps a book they are currently reading. I asked if I could pose with the AP World History book and was quickly told "No textbooks". But up until May 12th when my students take the only book I will be reading is the AP World History textbook.
See kids, particularly you special AP World History kids, I feel your pain. Every night when you go home to read the assigned pages, I'm reading future assigned pages. I don't mind admitting this to you, you're all aware that this is my first time teaching AP World and you are in serious denial if you think I can just pick up this content. I sympathize, I really do. I feel your pain. When you tell me that it takes FOREVER to read a chapter and take notes on it, I get it, because I am at home doing the EXACT. SAME. THING.
I see all of these teachers posting on their doors what they are reading and I am jealous. I wish I had to the time to read something that had nothing to do with what I teach on a daily basis but at this point in my AP World life, it just isn't feasible.
So when you go home and tell yourself that you only have 7 pages to read tonight, compared to the 10 you had the night before (yeah I know it will still take you at least an hour to get through), I'm sitting at my house thinking the same thing. Goodbye Nicholas Sparks books, goodbye historical fiction, see you next summer when I don't have millions of years of history to cover in 9 months time.
